Oh my goodness, I played it the first time when I was 14 too. And then I replayed it again years later. Now that it's also on PC, I played it once more. It's always a thrilling experience. I love that the team working on it were bold enough to experiment with game mechanics (that a lot of modern games lack these days) even if it wasn't appreciated as much at the time. I love the fact that the room felt unsafe at the end and you wanted to escape to an even more unsafe environment just to want to go back again for respite even though it's truly not safe. I love the fact that you can't kill the ghosts, only bind them. I love the fact that Walter is cruel and relentless chasing you. I also find the story deeply moving. I feel so much sadness and compassion for little Walter, becoming an orphan, thinking of the room as mommy, being brainwashed by a cult. It's so heartbreaking.
I agree that the boldness is underappreciated in this game. For us who were playing this growing up, it was a total mindf*ck. You felt bad for little Walter, while ran for your life with the adult version. The story had so many layers that even after replays I was still uncovering secrets and connecting the dots from notes etc. I hope they one day give it the Silent Hill 2 treatment and do a remake!
It is so layered, that’s for sure! I also love that it gives context to other characters and connects to the other games a bit. It definitely deserves a remake. I hope you’ll enjoy SH2 soon. It’s excellent and expands on the story and character
So I never got to play maria cuz I had the original version of the ps2 game without the extras. So I am so stocked to hear about this. Im glad its a remake + extra content and the spookiness is still there
Oh the only thing is that they didn’t remake the Maria game sadly :(. But maybe it will come as DLC someday? Unless it’s in new game+ which I haven’t checked out yet.
There are more scenes with Maria not in the original, more expansion upon Angela's trauma too. The game is much longer, taking its time and feels more tense. You'll love it!
Never finished this one, I certainly would have remembered what you put in the spoiler warning, haha. I appreciated that SH4 tried to do something different for sure, but man, I couldn't get past the combat and the tedium of visiting a lot of the same places over and over again.
I know one could argue none of the Silent Hill games have good combat and that's true, but I always felt like I could overcome the more challenging parts in the previous games. SH4 just overwhelmed me.
That said, I haven't played it in 20 years, so I could be misremembering.
I appreciate you sharing your passion for the game here!
It was bold for sure, and I actually thought it was the most solid in the combat aspect compared to 3 and 2. I do see your point with the revisiting the same nightmare locations, but I enjoyed it because the 2nd time you usually have more context on why you're put in the area, with harder enemies and more complex puzzle.
I do hope they remake 3 & 4 like they did too. I definitely am passionate about those games so thanks for reading!
Give it a shot! This one is def more unconventional than the rest. So for a more straight fwd gameplay I’d say play 2 or 3.. but if you want just weird then this ones the way to go 😎

I have yet to play any SH game, but this hypes me up. Maybe it's time to play one.

Watched a full playthrough of this and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I could see even the playthrough being creepy. Maybe I’ll go watch one soon too!
