Thank you for sharing these. I found the record collecting and playing especially nice. I’m a serial song skipper so this is definitely a nice way to enjoy music and actually initially be forced to enjoy it. 💚
I also curate based on interests although it did get out of hand at one point but I scaled back again.
I do find the ignoring DMs bit hard. I need to be better at setting and expressing my need for boundaries I think. But this is a great list of strategies to try.
Curating your social media feed is definetley something that takes work, but it's less work than constantly scrolling to find things that inspire you. DM's was also tricky for me (still is), cause I hate leaving things unreplied and sturpid red notifications right on my face!
But it's really about learning to set boundaries, getting rid of the 'follow for follow' practice and only engage with those who do inspire and have conversations with. Also realizing not everybody/everything deserves your attention. I'm so glad these tips help! PS, I think handheld gaming is a great alternative as well :)
Yeah it’s hard to set boundaries for sure. I tend to want to be a nice person but we only have so much time in the day to do all the things we need to or want to do and that’s ok.
I actually started handled gaming again to relax in a better way than doom scrolling. I’m glad to hear you also think it’s a nice way to do that. I have also tried to read a proper book before bedtime again to reduce screen time in the evenings. It seems to be working. Even though I have more vivid fantasy dreams now. lol
One trick I found with that is limiting who can private message me. Such as instagram now where theres an option to only recieve messages on those you follow back. I get the challenge for sure.
And yes booktime before bed> scrolling cause your mind isnt bouncing off the rails from so many things you just consumed, and those dreams are a lot more fun than ads you last saw before your eyes shut anyways haha
I was talking with my brother about physical media for music. He has started collecting vinyls and CDs and said that the kind of ritual aspect to it has increased his enjoyement of the music, because it then became an experience.
And during the few days I stayed with him, I understood. The act of picking out a vinyl, putting it on the gramaphone and sitting back and chatting while the music plays was a great time for me. I don't know how easily I can adapt this to my own life, but I'd certainly like to try!
I love that, and the fact that you guys played it through a gramaphone too is awesome!
That is exactly how I got into it, it's the whole experience of picking up a vinyl you want to listen to over and over again, and because money is limited, so are your choices so you appreciate their value more. And then there's the conversational of sitting through a record and discussing it together, as well as finding communities who do the same and exchanging recommendations and trading is such an experience! I hope you do find a way to adapt this into your lifestyle as it does offer numerous benefits, except the fact on being heavy on the wallet haha
I found playing records had a similar effect. Some people think the process is more inconvenient than streaming, but that becomes part of the ritual and enjoyment of it.
A bit more focus on modern metal/ 2000’s punk and emo that I grew up in, and in the past year japanese city pop! So yeah I got quite the variety as well 🤘🏼
Old jazz, classic 60s, lots of 80s (post-punk, new wave, pop etc) and 90s/00's grunge, alt, indie, brit-pop etc. And, of course, the odd new release or re-release thrown in the mix as well.
The collection had got a little out of hand so I've recently started pruning it back.
I love listening to Drum & Bass, especially DJ mixes. I find that listening to a mix that’s one long track (vs. individual tracks) helps me to just listen to the whole thing and not skip just because a song my not be my absolute favorite. I try to just enjoy the journey.
Longform youtube - absolutely!! I watch a lot of video game playthroughs and long essays. And switch autoplay off so when a video is done, you have to then get invested in making a decision about what to do next, rather than the app deciding for you!
Same! And auto play off is a must. That way I can take a moment to reflect and also intentionally decide what im the mood for next rather than algorithm giving me more similiar things

The way I relate to this lol

Good post.
That sounds like a sick collection! Def gotta have a mix of classic and new to keep ya curious
Absolutely. It's a better way to support local NZ artists over streaming as well. What styles do you collect?

Oh, nice. City Pop is the best!
Yup! The non-instant, and no skip playback is the ritual itself and part of the enjoyment.
I'm glad you do the same for records, curious as to what type of records are you collecting?
Too many types!
