I can think of a few games that recently felt like they knew what they were doing and didn't expect any more than their time in the limelight then bowed out:

1. Guardians of the Galaxy: the team dynamic was an interesting idea and executed well and the plot while predictable kept moving and I felt satisfied with the finish but felt no need to return to it

2. Doom (2016) the opening puts it best: "there are demons from another dimension coming, here is a shotgun get to work"

I know there are others but I'm at work and need to refocus. Great article and topic I look forward to seeing your posts in the future

I think you may get your wish here. Given the way the industry is going, I think we're going to retreat to a simpler time with games for a while, at least for a lot of titles.

AAA titles are struggling to crack the top-10 most played, and if they do its short-lived. League, Fortnight, GTA 5 and Counterstrike are dominating players time globally.

But yeah, interesting read! Well written and made me think! Thanks!

Thank you for reading! And that would be great for AAA's to go into simpler games for a while. Even remakes of simpler games like the resident evil series I can appreciate and am willing to buy them, for the quality rather than the quantity of hours I'm supposed to put in it.

I think there is a lot of choice and you gotta wade through a lot of bullshit. I’m huge into survival games, I’ve played all the big ones this year. But the best one? The one so well thought out it doesn’t feel like a drag? The one that was free but feels like a Triple AAA (Once Human).

There is definetely too much choices to play in 4 lifetimes! So you do gotta really choose the one you want to spend your precious adult free time on. I'm a fan of some survival ones that has plenty of wonder and don't feel like a drag as well like Sub nautica. Once human looks really good!

This is highly relatable as a busy parent to two with a full time job and hobbies. I do like more expansive open worlds with lots of quests at times, like Skyrim. But there are other games I'm intimidated to even start because they are such a huge time commitment.

Maybe that's part of the appeal of "cozy" games. You can pop in and out casually.

I still like big games like skyrim, witcher as well. But we just gotta really pick and choose these days. This is why I like those “cozy” games esp indie ones that can be completed in 10hrs or less.

Also, I like rouge lites because you can pickup for 30mins, or play forever and theres always a satisfaction!

Yep, that makes a lot of sense!

I feel this. Besides BG3 which is our only chore game going on for obvious reasons (because we're D&D nerds, it stokes the flame to continue writing fantasy and it's couch co-op!, not to mention the hot men in it hahahaha), we've been enjoying the shorter games. Nintendo seems to be good for that. The last one we played was Super Mario Wonder, my partner played the new Metroid. We need more games like that, like Stray!!!!

I tried to pick up Assassin's Creed and it was pretty tough since it's a pretty big world. There are franchises that I'll always play but yah, with the constant long games, you reeeaaally gotta pick and choose.

Some games we're looking forward to playing that's coming out or just came out.

-Cat Quest 3

-Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (looks to be another link's awakening length game)

-Donkey Kong

Great post!

if it brings you joy, then it's not a chore. But I agree with plenty of these games just having too much to do you really have to pick and choose, unless it's nintendo. I had so much fun with Mario wonder and metroid!

A shorter more linear Zelda coming out after the Tears is also appreciated. And donkey kong along with courch coop platformers I'll always play!

True!!! Yah there’s only a few long franchises I’m willing to play. Nintendo def knows where it’s at!

I agree some games today are a chore, i couldn't finish tears of the kingdom because it was just too lengthy and not engaging enough. Games like baldurs gate 3 and elder scrolls online are a turn off because of how much I imagine I'll have to learn just to enjoy the experience. I'm not a streamer that has hours to invest in these games. Only exception for me has been elden ring but even playing that required a lot of research for me to understand what was necessary and what to skip. Great post!

Tysm and I def feel that pain, elden ring was another one I was able to play almost all the way through but still be filled w wonder.

But why does everything need a big learning curve or a deep crafting system to understand? We need games where we dont have to have google open at all times on the side!!

Doom is a great examples of when I just want a ridiculously violent shooter. Stell blade was great for this too as its basically marketed as as just a fun classic slasher with a hot chick and I got exactly that.

Thank you for subbing and hope to talk more gaming w u!
